NUI Galway Agrees Rebate on Proposed Rent increase for On-Campus Accommodation for the Next Academic Year

In the face of the current challenging financial context faced by our students, and following engagement between university management, student representatives and Atalia Student Residences DAC, NUI Galway has agreed to provide a rebate to students in university accommodation equivalent to the planned 3-4% increase in the rental cost of on-campus student accommodation for the Academic Year 2020/21. Following the start of the next academic Year, the University will liaise directly with our students in Goldcrest Village and Corrib Village to organise this refund.  In addition, should there be any change to the duration of the academic year on campus arising from COVID-19 restrictions, rent will only be charged on a pro rata basis for the revised dates.

As a consequence of the decision to rebate the rent rise, there will no net increase in the amounts paid by students staying in Goldcrest or Corrib Village in the year 2020/21 and students can avail of campus accommodation with rates starting at €98 per week for the next academic year. NUI Galway’s decision is consistent with our mission and is made with our students’ welfare in mind, specifically in the context of the COVID-19 crisis, which has created financial uncertainty and pressure for our students, their families and the University.

The cost of accommodation remains one of the primary concerns of students in Galway and across Ireland. To support NUI Galway students at this time, campus residents who returned home following the University closure in March have had a portion of their rent refunded, and the University’s Campus Residences, Student Services and International Office have been facilitating and supporting students who were unable to return home. The University has also been in dialogue with landlords in the private sector, and advising students on their accommodation rights and responsibilities.

The decision to rebate the rental increase gives certainty for incoming and returning students who will be staying in campus residences in the 2020/21 academic year. In its strategic plan for 2020-25, Shared Vision, Shaped by Values, NUI Galway is committed to building ‘additional affordable and sustainable on-campus accommodation for our students’. This commitment is reaffirmed and supported by the University.

Virtual Open Day: On-campus accommodation is particularly popular among First Year students. Staff from Campus Residences and the Accommodation and Welfare Office will be taking part in NUI Galway’s Virtual Open Day on Thursday 7 May from 12-3pm at www.nuigalway.ie/opendays where prospective students can ask their questions directly.
